Diaries of a Graphic Designer

I`m 23, I am a graphic designer and illustrator. Some may consider it quite a broad specialisation but for the time being I happen to do both. I am constantly experimenting, trying to broaden my horizons and combine the skills I have. I`m from Russia but I live in the UK and love both countries.

Where do you find your daily inspiration?

I believe that inspiration mustn`t be sought in only one thing. Every project needs its own style and a unique idea. But I will say one thing: look for inspiration in people. Everything that has ever been made by artists or desingers – all of it is for the people. If you are desinging a chair, take note of how people use it, draw it – think about what people actually miss.

What are your daily work & lifestyle essentials?

Designers are profound for their love of things like the iPAD or a Moleskin but I have neither. However, I have a number of fetishes which are must haves for me:

  • A4 sketchbook with a monochrome cover and blank ivory coloured sheets
  • A set of waterproof calligraphy pens (0.2, 0.3, 0.7). I never normally add aqua colours on top of my artwork, nevertheless all pens must fit this criteria just in case I burst into tears and ruin my drawing for not reaching the level I had intended with my work. 🙂
  • Cateye glasses for working on the computer
  • Silver pen I sign my business cards with
  • Classic design watch with a modest face telling the exact time

What does your normal workday look like?

I live on British time no matter where I am. I always start my day with cereal and reading e-mails. I then work on my current projets till about lunchtime. For lunch I either make RAF coffee (a Moscow recipe for whisked coffee) or have a proper traditional English tea. This is the time I like to devote to reading specialised printed media and books. I finish my workday around 6 – 7 pm provided I don`t have any urgent projects. Occasionally I can be so consumed with a project I end up working till 4 am.

The Go-To List

5 cosmetic items you cannot live without

1. I cannot live without the perfume I created myself at It`s called Bitch by Marina Babitchova. It`s rather strong and more masculine than feminine.

2. Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Lip Balm

3. Clinique Bronzer

4. Black or Navy Liquid Eyeliner with a soft tip

5. Burgundy Lipstick (the shade means so much more than the brand)

Must Have Book

Manifestos and theoretical essays by Kazimir Malevich

Must See Film

3 places to go in MOSCOW

More Vnutri Cafe (because you don`t get told off for crumbs in bed)

Eliseevskiy Store (I go for modest shopping)

Russian State Library – Former Lenin Library (I`d really like to visit it)

3 places to go in LONDON

Who was your biggest influence?

My biggest influence was Van Goth. His art inspires me with its vibrant colour combinations and I think his way of drawing is simply perfect. I am also inspired by Russian native culture. As of now I am not quite sure what I`m going to do with this inspiration. I`m not currently using any Russian ornaments in my artwork but I`m planning on producing a Russia inspired art project. It would be ideal for showing my love to my culture.
